You continue to say people have a choice, but where is mine to not have an always on connection and use Labs now?
Just bought it yesterday and I am absolutely floored at how good it sounds. I have my own 'Virtual' orchestral space to craft my music now. Thank you Spitfire. ❤
great orchestration vid, thank you very much!
Great video Paul. BBCSO and Hans Z sounds best for me.
Rick Rubin's book on the desk!
It's good the old stuff is available. I've come away from Subscription models.
Is there any word on whether more pricey Spitfire plugins will adopt a LABS-esque approach of having a unified loader plugin, instead of a separate plugin for each instrument? It's neat that more continues to be available under the LABS+ name, but that only divides the divergence of why there isn't a "One plugin to load them all" despite there being a shared core engine.
@torley I see you here 💜 yo need to do videos again 😎
Which library is best suited for baroque music?
What is the name of tthe Red MIDI CC controller ??
Hey Paul, thinking about the same things here (livelong composer / musician turning 70 next year). Very first thoughts about your 5 things (and Not a critique! Just doing the same as you): Those 5, …. aren‘t those the exact same goals you had 10 / 20 /40 years ago? All the very best, Jochen
Bernard Herman and Jerry Goldsmith were two of my favorite film composers. The descending line is reminiscent of one of Howard Hanson’s Symphonies. I can’t remember off the top of my head which one. Bernard Herman was the Master of using just a few instruments to create so much tension. Listen to “Talking Tina”. Anyway, great job ❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing these thoughts Paul as so many of us are facing these same questions trying to find answers, balance, direction and meaning.
Great video Paul, thanks for sharing 👍 You might find some useful ideas to help you achieve your goals in the book Atomic Habits by James Clear (which you may well have read already). I've been listening to a chapter each day over lunch on Audible & finding it very useful & motivating. Pairs well with The Creative Act by Rick Rubin (which I know you've read already) which I find makes superb listening material for inspiring car journeys.
Just a quick observation. Beware when you upgrade the LABS plugin. At the time I write this when you open it it has to log in your account. It means you can't use your LABS when you're not connected to the internet. ☹ I think this is a bug (a serious one) and I hope Spitfire will fix this in a short time. In the meantime I've reinstaled the old plugin version 1.5.1
Bruh i just fallen for this, it’s so frustrating
Also can u send me the old install? I would like to reinstall the old one as m not sure they would really fix it
@@bououdenahmed779 I would love to do that for you but unfortunately I'm not sure I'm legaly allowed to do that. 😟 Maybe you can find on an old backup of your own computer?
@@FLH3official if the "old back up" is the old installation then m pretty sure i deleted it if theres another way you found the old back up I would appreciate you telling me about it
@@bououdenahmed779 Actualy no need of the full install, the only thing you need is the plugin itself, the .vst , the .vst3 or the .component, just that, not the whole installation package. Furthermore I've only kept the .component (I'm on logic with an Intel machine). If you're an a mac with time machine you'll find it in the backuped plugin folders
That‘s so inspiring to hear! I also did a lot of teaching in other areas so far and I loved it. Also wanna do that in music in the future. You learn sooo much ❤️🔥🎶❤️🔥 And I‘d love to be your student 🤓🎼
Hi, Paul - lovely album. Please complete the ‘Creating Your Album’ series. You’ve only given us parts 1-3 so far. X
Labs+ is a bad move. Love Labs but Labs+ should have been a seperate thing. I don't want subscriptions.
Super! Theese are the words young people need to hear! This is teaching!
Thank you!
That’s a great little piece! The opening chord change and even the melody has a beautiful open dawn on a mountain might right out of the golden age (or the 80s for me- when Williams was still a dominant influence, maintaining the power of a melody- all while remaining an aerodynamic piece!
Thanks Andrew! very kind!
It was interesting, when watching the first part of your video, before you even mentioned it, a thought popped into my head: that you - Paul - should be teaching …
Thanks Magnus - one day! in the meantime I do the odd talk here and there!
Thank you for this frankness. I think many of us share this (I'm 44 years old and apart from the fact that I don't create sound banks, I see a lot of myself in what you say.) I confirm that you learn a lot by teaching. I started music 31 years ago and I've been teaching for 25! I wish you to achieve your goals! The fact of wanting to teach more is a very good thing! For my part, I play on stage with other musicians, I compose music on a computer (with lots of Spitfire sounds, of course!) and I also create just for myself, with my wooden flute and my pedals. of effects. I even do research to continue to nourish my mind (I am finishing a doctoral thesis in musicology). What I want today is just to be able to make a decent living from it. (I still need to improve my English, I rely a little too much on Google translate :-))
I've been appreciating your videos, so I look forward to more in future. Keep 'em coming!
I needed to hear this... same exact plans/goals/interruptions/struggles. Thank you.
The Rocketeer is my favorite superhero soundtrack. RIP James Horner.
I will have to correct your Italian and Latin pronunciation, Paul! 🙂 Jokes aside, you are absolutely on point with what you mention in the video, ta as always for sharing your thoughts
A good message for everyone, especially those of us who've been at this a few decades... I had a professor tell me "life is just a series of compromises" - turns out he was right.
There's still never enough time Paul, even in retirement 😅
Thank you for sharing. I'm very curious to learn about what happened to your analogue tape machine and experience? Loved it? Hated it? Back into storage?
Never managed to use it! Spent ages getting it set up beautifully so I sold it. Maybe another day in the future I'll have the time!

Hi Paul, I have decided to change my career path to music where my passion really lies. Have you heard about ThinkSpace who has courses to open people to do their masters in music production. Nice to hear you have found a path. Its not retire its retry.
Paul... I doubt that you'll ever truly retire. just move from one thing to something else.
You know me too well!
@@PaulThomsonMusic ... musicians never really retire.
Thanks for another thoughtful video, Paul. I get just as much from these as the walk throughs. 👊🏽
Thanks Paul!
Well this one hit a little close to home - just feels like there's never enough hours in a day! The world needs good teachers; all of the most influential people in my own life have been teachers, in one form or another.
Yes - I've had a few truly inspirational teachers - they left a life long impression on me!
Hey Paul
Hi Simon!
Excellent work, thanks.
Hey just downloaded the new labs. I am very disappointed in the functionality of the plugin and app. Though it is nice to know I can download more sounds I can no longer just click through the instruments and presets to land on one. What was once a one-click matter and exploratory is now a three-step process of clicking the menu clicking the instrument (which could at this step just be a load button) and then loading a preset from the instrument with no way of getting to other instruments beyond doing this process again. This makes this VST a hassle to use in comparison to its previous versions. LABS is a great tool for exploration this new update has made that more difficult. You also can't set the content path separate form the application in the LABS application.
Thanks for your feedback - passed it on!
A beautiful insight Paul. 🤩
Nice new tidy studio Paul. I must have a good de clutter in mine. Need to move a few things around too, lol.
Not quite as tidy this week!
I love this plugin. It's absolutely the mutt's nuts. Very addictive indeed. Great one Paul. More reviews please.
👌💯⭐
Just started watching this on my phone. Realised that maybe that it’s not the right device for this video
lol! yes agreed
You make me want to try this reverb with my wooden flute !
Thanks Stewen! Give it a go!
@@PaulThomsonMusic Done ! And it's beautiful !
I see the Waves LoAir didn't get featured like the last time. Great video as alway, Paul.
Always tweaking the tools I use!
Yes, more please. With the plethora of plugins available this idea of focusing on a handful of plugins designed for specific purpose is valuable. OFC with low-end frequencies there is a requirement of knowing where and on what system replay will take place. Typically, anything below 40Hz will not be reproduced on most user systems. This includes many of the near field "studio" monitors (typically low drivers under 8", 200mm) and consumer devices. The question becomes do we produce different masters targeting the general replay systems and the extended low frequency systems (bass bins, dedicated low sub frequency drivers)? This in turns requires using a "dedicated woofer" centred in a stereo field, or the appropriate channel in surround & multi-channel formats for our listening. Thanks for the video - always the best.
Thanks for the kind words! Yes this is a really interesting area. The lowest C on the Double Basses is approx 32.7Hz, so often your impression of these low notes comes from the harmonics and your brain fills in the fundamental - if the system can't reproduce those low frequencies. Airpods for example drop by about 15dB at this frequency. but it is present!
Paul has a wonderful approach
Thank you Dennis!
Thanks for sharing Paul! I do love Ozone low end as it is excellent for mastering, but for mixing, Waves Maxxbass does this really well. However, it combines both subharmonics and some form of compression to make it punchier. So, it is probably not too dissimilar from Ozone low end. I'm not sure how well Maxxbass is for orchestral mixing, it seems to work better for electronic and band instruments. Cheers!
Thanks Andrew - I haven't used that one for a while! Yes you're right - its a good one but the lack of control detail stopped me using it once there were more options. But it was my goto back in the day!
@@PaulThomsonMusic Ah, I believe I understand what you mean about the lack of control. Probably explains why I haven't found use for it in my regular score mixing. I'll definitely check out sub-gen though, I do enjoy multi-band control!
I tried different ways with EQ and multiband compression, ozone or Rbass on the same percussions and always felt i was missing something. I was never satisfied and hated my percussions in every track. However, the example with SUB GEN is legendary and think its the sound i am searching for. Leapwing sounds good too and more natural with with the lighter settings. Thanks Paul. Regarding the ending of the video, i would like to know more of panning an whole orchestra. no matter what i do with own panning based of schemes or using the default presets, it still sounds wrong, muddy or lack of space between instruments.
Good idea! OK I'll have a think about that one.
@@PaulThomsonMusic An example of what i trying to do, is creating an album using the abbey road orchestra to create an dark but energetic track in the sci-fi setting, while layering the low ends of the BBCSO piano with the Symphonic Organ + choir + percussions (low, mid, high and metals). Violin 1 leader (center), violin 1 -10% left, violin 2 leader (center), violins 2 (center), viola leader (center) viola -10% left, cello leader (center), cello +10% right, double basses +40%(right), Choir female (-30% left) Choir male (+30% right) horns +10% (right), High string staccato (right - stero swap), Organ (+20% right), percussions (center) but crashes +10% (right) Synths (center,) and effects (30% pan left and right)
3:05 I've already explained this to Christian a few years ago; RUclips's compression starts butchering the top-end, while leaving the low-end untouched. No HPF of the sort is applied, so you don't have to worry about this region not translating through the medium. 4:00 This region is typically refered to as "mid" to "upper bass" ;-) I use Ozone all the time but didn't now about the Low End Focus module. Which version was that introduced in? Been on 8 since forever. Looks quite neat!
Ah thanks for that info! Ozone wise - its in 11 but I didn't have it before 11 so not sure where it started!
SubGen is the best I use it all the time !SSL has been serious with their latest software releases (Irrelevant but check their delays as well you will be amazed)
